Title:Manager of Programs

OVERVIEW
The mission of the BCC is to harness the power and joy of music as a catalyst for uniting Boston’s diverse communities and inspiring social change. Beginning in 2003 with only 20 children in a pilot training program, today the BCC has nearly 400 young singers in nine choirs in four Boston locations. In just five years, BCC has already been recognized as a key player in Boston’s landscape and has distinguished itself for its diversity, artistic excellence and commitment to nurturing singers as musicians, responsible citizens and future consumers of the arts. Called Boston’s “Ambassadors of Harmony” by the Boston Globe, the BCC presents over 40 performances each season, including appearances ranging from the Pine Street Inn to the Inauguration of Governor Deval Patrick, the Boston Pops Fourth of July Celebration and tours to Japan, Mexico, and Jordan.  BCC’s signature even is the nationally televised syndication of its Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert on WCVB ABC.

PURPOSE
The Manager of Programs is responsible for assisting the Director of Programs and working closely with the artistic staff in implementing the overall goals of the BCC’s core programs, which includes: choir programs, visiting artists and scholars program, youth development programs, and national and international touring.  The Program Manager will manage aspects of general program administration including planning, implementation and evaluation of the programs and community engagement.  Operating under BCC standards for collaboration in community outreach ventures, the Program Manager has visibility in the community, interacting with stakeholders and therefore has a profound effect on the way in which BCC advances its mission.  This position provides an opportunity for an individual with superior planning skills, communication, and relationship-building skills. Maintain and model a cooperative, supportive, professional working environment, and provide leadership in the development of inter-team communication and cohesiveness.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Manager of Programs reports to the Director of Programs and works closely with the artistic staff.  The Manager of Programs also works closely with a diverse group of singers and parents.

JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performance Requests 30%

  • Process all performance requests.  Track and communicate current status of requests to appropriate staff.
  • Attend events and manage singers, performance request relationships, and logistics (local travel involved).
  • Promote, market, and manage BCC’s performance request capacity with outside organizations including periodic communication with past organizations BCC has worked with and possible future organizations or businesses.

Youth Development and Social program 30%

  • Manage singer mentor and leadership program.   The Mentor and leadership program provides singers the opportunities to develop a sense of volunteerism, integrity, excellence, teamwork and community partnership.
  • Facilitate monthly meetings with mentors and plan meaningful activities and events.
  • Maintain presence in youth development and after-school programming field to continually monitor external assessment trends. Advise and recommend actions in relation to quality improvement processes to ensure BCC is a leader in specific, measurable, quality youth programming. 

Communication 10%

  • Manage weekly electronic communication with families.
  • Manage BCC website, Facebook, Twitter feed, and BCC blog.
  • Promote BCC’s presence in the Boston community ensuring appropriate participation in community meetings, boards, conferences, events, and organizations that could provide interns.
  • Cultivate and coordinate relationships that provide social services and student resources.
  • Develop strong relationships with BCC children and families, nurture the development of each child, and provide appropriate support for children and families experiencing difficulties.

Evaluation 10%

  • Manage BCC’s robust evaluation process based on BCC’s logic model.  Evaluation of programs includes, but is not limited to, performances, end of the year parent survey, exit surveys, focus groups, camp surveys, and concert surveys.
  • Manage and produce regular reports to track, document, and measure program and community engagement progress; evaluate results and recommend future initiatives based on program needs.

Recruitment and Auditions 10%

  • Create and implement recruitment strategies based on organizational goals.  Raise awareness of BCC programs and organize auditions for school, religious, and community organizations.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of recruitment strategies.
  • Manage audition application input, audition scheduling, and audition day logistics.
  • Manage audition results.  Organize results in database and communicate results to artistic staff.

Administrative Duties 10%

  • Facilitate special projects, partnerships and collaborations under the direction of the Director of Programs.
  • Process and track tuition and other fees.
  • Process and track singers’ attendance history.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Artistic Staff in working with Neighborhood and centralized programs; attend rehearsals, performances, retreats and tours as needed.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree, minimum 4+ years direct experience in non-profit administration, organizing and/or community relations; working knowledge of Boston community
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Demonstrated passion for working with youth and families; knowledge of arts management a plus
  • Ability to work as a member of a team, as well as lead teams of children/youth, volunteers and peers required
  • The right candidate will be a capable, independent worker with strong entrepreneurial spirit, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills,  especially public speaking, presentation and written skills; strong administrative and computer  skills required
  • Proven ability to successfully manage multiple aspects of large projects
  • Knowledge of child development, group leadership, planning and scheduling required
  • Experience managing performances or musical groups a plus
  • Commitment to BCC’s mission and values of quality, diversity, respect, responsibility and unity

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The position requires some evening and weekend hours.
  • The position sometimes requires lifting a keyboard and amp.

Title: Teaching Fellow
Salary: $15 hourly; no benefit package
Hours: Part-time, must accommodate some weekend rehearsals & performances

PURPOSE:

The Boston Children’s Chorus seeks highly motivated music students to assist with weekly rehearsals (accessible by the T) and performances during our 2009-2010 season. Working with choruses of various skill levels, teaching fellows will play a critical role in skill building. The primary responsibility of the teaching fellow is to plan and teach weekly music education classes under the direction of the artistic staff. The position will assist the Artistic Director and Assistant Artistic Director in preparing the singers with the opportunity to conduct rehearsals. The position will also work directly with the Program Staff on logistics and in insuring the safety of the singers. We seek a dynamic individual passionate about children and committed to artistic excellence and music education. The ideal candidate will have experience working with many diverse constituents and highly skilled in musicianship. Major responsibilities include modeling positive musical habits and providing musical support to our young developing singers; additional areas of expertise may include vocal pedagogy, diction, and/or movement.

DUTIES:

  • To assist the Artistic Director, Assistant Artistic Director, and Program Staff with choirs of the BCC during rehearsals, performances and special events
  • Plan and teach weekly music education classes and assign and correct homework and assessments as needed
  • Document lessons
  • Instruct singers on proper posture, vocal technique, performance/presentation
  • Lead small group rehearsals
  • Evaluate progress of singers, monitor and develop choir members singing habits
  • Set up rehearsal space as requested by Staff
  • Distribute and receive sheet music, snacks, etc…
  • Maintain evaluation records on each singer and prepare reports for Artistic Staff
  • Travel with singer and chaperone performances/concerts
  • Assist with music library duties as needed
  • Assist Program Staff with performance logistics
  • Supervise singer arrival and dismissal for rehearsals and concerts
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with singers and families

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music, or pursuing degree
  • Experience working with young singers
  • Kodály teaching experience desirable
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • The right candidate will be a capable, independent worker with strong entrepreneurial spirit, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment

We are a multi-cultural, multi-racial nonprofit arts organization that brings together a diverse group of children in grades 2-12 from urban and suburban neighborhoods to discover the joys of singing together. Music is the powerful tool we employ for social change.

Volunteers already have enabled us to engage many children in the Greater Boston area, but more help with program promotion and singer recruitment is needed. BCC INTERNSHIP

The Boston Children’s Chorus has an opening for an intern at their headquarters at 112 Shawmut Avenue in Boston. This is an exciting opportunity to participate in the operations of an inspiring children’s choral music program.

Hours: 8-12 hours per week (approximate); weekdays

Responsibilities:

Intern will provide support to Development, Foundation Relations, Program, and Business staff. He/She will perform a variety of duties related to chorus rehearsals and concerts, as well as to periodic special events.

In addition, he/she will maintain integrity of select databases, prepare press and other information packets, and handle tasks such as mailings and filing.

Requirements:

Candidate should have excellent problem-solving and time management skills. He/she needs to be reliable, organized and professional. Candidate should also have an interest or major in arts, music, and/or community-building. Boston Children’s Chorus has a small staff working in a growing, exciting, mission-driven environment, and intern should also bring enthusiasm and flexibility to position.
