Greetings!
annette and anthony pict

We have had a remarkable start to our 5th anniversary season! Congratulations to each and every one of our singers for a spectacular performance at our The Spirit of Youth concert on November 8, and a heartfelt thank you to the Parents Association, who hosted the wonderful reception that followed. It was an honor to witness all nine choirs demonstrate their talents, as well as experience the sense of community that was in evidence at the show.

As we head into the holiday season, we have lots of exciting upcoming performances. These include the Macy's Tree Lighting on November 28, a Winter Concert at Faneuil Hall with the Back Bay Ringers on December 13, and of course our signature MLK concert on January 19 at Jordan Hall. Read on for more details. We hope to see you at an event soon!

During these uncertain economic times, we know that people turn to music and the arts for comfort, hope, and inspiration; so our work here at BCC is more important now than ever. We depend on the generosity of our community to provide life-changing experiences to hundreds of children while bringing the joy of music to audiences in Boston and beyond. The Spirit of Youth
BCC kicked off our 5th Anniversary Season with The Spirit of Youth concert on Saturday, November 8th at Tremont Temple in Boston. The performance featured all nine choirs and was an unmitigated success! Tremont Temple was buzzing with an avid and excited audience of all ages.

The music selections ranged from classical compositions by Bela Bartok to music featured in the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The youngest singers offered traditional songs from American, Japanese, Czech, and Hebrew traditions. The intermediate ensembles combined to perform an assortment of music by contemporary composers. The advanced choirs journeyed us through the music of Bob Chilcott and Edward Elgar. We were delighted with the spiritual Keep Your Lamps as singers from Premier Choir and the Young Men's Ensemble joined forces. There was something for everyone!

In between songs, singers from several choirs shared with the audience what the "spirit of youth" meant to them as well as the tremendous influence that music and BCC, has had on their lives.

The BCC Parent Association hosted a post- performance reception to congratulate the singers and thank those who came. The overall event was a wonderful success. Make sure to check out our event listings for upcoming performances - we hope to see you there!

Make sure to check out the BCC Blog - where our wonderful singers have a site of their own to post about concerts, events and fun at BCC!

Singers take turns as guest writers and chronicle their insider views on rehearsals, concerts, tours and more! The most recent entry is by guest writer Lydia Guterman of Concert Choir who blogs about the November 8 The Spirit of Youth concert and her excitement about the current season at BCC.

To take a look at what is going on behind the scenes, as well as how the performers themselves feel and what they experience, check out the BCC blog!

QUESTION: What is the term used to describe an adult male singer who uses his falsetto to sing in the alto or mezzo-soprano range? (the answer can be found at the end of this newsletter).

Boston Children's Chorus is sponsored in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. The New England Conservatory of Music is our lead artistic partner. State Street Corporation is our lead corporate sponsor.

ANSWER TO MUSIC TRIVIA QUESTION: Countertenor. This term is used in the context of the classical vocal tradition, although numerous popular artists also sing in their falsetto.
