Greetings!
annette and anthony pict

As we enter the hot and hazy New England summer months our singers have just barely wrapped up an incredibly busy and exciting 2007-2008 performance season. Our Premier Choir recently returned from their Oregon tour just in time to be at Fenway Park to sing the National Anthem for the Boston Red Sox on July 7th. All of our singers have worked incredibly hard this year and we've seen impressive results in their growth as both musicians and ambassadors of harmony.

This season we presented more than fifty performances in Boston and beyond. Highlights include welcoming Dr. Carol Johnson as the new Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools, performances in New York City and at the Pacific International Children's Chorus Festival in Oregon, our fifth annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Concert broadcast live on WCVB-TV Channel 5, and two appearances at Fenway Park!

Our fifth season was one of growth and expansion for the BCC. We have now been in our new state-of-the-art space, which combines our offices and central rehearsal sites, just shy of one year. This year we also expanded our neighborhood chorus program to the Allston-Brighton community in partnership with the West End House. As we bid a fond farewell to this season, we are eagerly anticipating an even more exciting season in 2008- 2009!

Read on to learn more about what's happening at the BCC, and please forward this newsletter to a friend by clicking here.

Thank you once again for your continued support of the Boston Children's Chorus.

Spring Concert Training Choirs
On June 14th at the historic Strand Theatre in Uphams Corner, Dorchester, all nine BCC choirs performed in Rhythm of Culture, a season-ending celebration of cultures from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas through drumming and rhythms. The free concert was co- sponsored by the City of Boston.

The program included Dominican and Argentinian folk songs, a Navajo blessing, lullabies, gospel, and traditional songs and spirituals. The concert was also the setting for the World Premiere of Kareem Roustrom's Hot Tea, Mint and Olives, an Arabic-styled piece, and the New England Premiere of the Langston Hughes poem I Dream a World, set to music by Peter Robb.

In a special homage, the Young Men's Voice Ensemble serenaded departing Villa Victoria Neighborhood Choir Director June Ambush with a rendition of I Love You Dearly as she was presented with flowers.

The concert ended on a sweet note with complimentary Chocolate Peppermint brownies for all singers and audience members generously donated by the Dancing Deer Baking Company!

Concert Choir in NYC
Concert Choir NYC Excursion

On May 3rd and 4th the BCC Concert Choir took a whirlwind weekend excursion to New York City (pictured left). While in the Big Apple, our choristers participated in a singing exchange with the Young People's Chorus of New York City, had dinner at Mars 2112, and attended a Broadway performance of Alfred Hitchcock's classic "39 Steps", all in one day! On the second day, the Choir performed at the Union Chapel AME Church in Newark, New Jersey before heading back to Boston.

Premier Choir Oregon Tour

From June 24th through July 2nd BCC's Premier Choir traveled to Eugene and Portland, Oregon to participate in the Pacific International Children's Choir Festival (PICCFest). While at PICCFest, the singers stayed in dorms at the University of Oregon in Eugene. The five day festival included a total of nine youth choirs from around the country. Observing, rehearsing with, learning from, and getting to know their peer choirs was an invaluable experience for our singers. A highlight of the festival was the chance to rehearse with Maestro Helmuth Rilling, world-renowned conductor of the Orgeon Bach Festival, which was occuring simultaneously with PICCFest.

While in Eugene, the choir also perfomed at the U.S. Olympic Trials, and attended a performance of the Bach B Minor Mass. After PICCFest, the choir ventured to Portland where they took in some sightseeing and hiking, as well as a final performance at All Saints Church. After an exciting but exhausting 9 days, the choir said goodbye to Oregon and headed back to Boston.

Shakespeare

QUESTION: What famous quote from William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night has been cherished by musicians and composers alike, including Henry Purcell? (the answer can be found at the end of this newsletter).

Ray Daniels
We are pleased to welcome Ray Daniels to the BCC family as our new Manager of Programs and Recruitment.

For the past two years, Ray has enjoyed working as an Artistic Assistant at the Boston Pops where he helped to produce performances, tours, and other public or private engagements for the Pops. He currently serves as the Conductor of the Honors Orchestra for the Nashoba Youth Orchestras. In this role he conducts the top group and employs his artistic management skills by managing productions, volunteers, auditions, and finding new ways to attract new participants to the organization. In 2003, Ray founded Daniels Music Schools, an organization created to bridge the gap between diminishing music education programs in schools and individuals seeking high quality music education. For the next three years, he created music programs in several schools in the Greater Boston area.

As a testament to his talent as a composer, Ray's Rev. E.L. Knight for Solo Tuba was premiered by Boston Symphony Orchestra Principal Tubist, Michael Roylance, during the 2007 Tanglewood season. Prior to his role at the Boston Pops, Ray taught in some of the top schools in the nation including Philips Exeter Academy. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance from the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama; a double Masters in Trombone Performance and Music Education from the Boston Conservatory in Boston, MA and a third Masters in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. Ray is a lifetime student of the culinary arts. He currently resides in the Boston area with his wife Kikuyu, and their dog, Lula.

Susan Monack & BCC
GREGORY B. MONACK FOUNDATION

The Boston Children's Chorus is both honored and proud to be the first recipient of funds from the Gregory B. Monack Foundation. Founder Susan Monack, pictured third from left with BCC's Artistic Director Anthony Trecek-King, Executive Director Annette Rubin and Premier Choir graduate Sherylynn Sealy, presents a $10,000 check to the Boston Children's Chorus from the May 30th Fundraiser "An Evening for Greg's Kids", the foundation's first organized event.

The mission of The Gregory B. Monack Foundation, Inc., founded in 2008, is to support sports and music programs for youth that teach participants self respect, respect for those different from them, and the importance of personal responsibility. Greg was born on Jan. 22, 1984 in Milton, attending Milton schools through grade 6. He attended Noble & Greenough School in grades 7-12. In September 2002, he entered the Boston College Honors Program. Shortly after his freshman year, on June 10, 2003, Greg died in a car accident 2 miles from home. He was 19.

Two of Greg's great loves were sports and music. He played Milton Little League and soccer, and later, Varsity football and lacrosse. Always full of energy and intensity, Greg also skateboarded, skiied, snowboarded, and played tennis and golf. Keenly attuned to music from early on, Greg took piano and guitar lessons, and briefly played in a band. Music gave Greg much joy, whether as the backdrop to a video game or on the latest Phish CD. Greg thrived on his passionate participation in sports and music, and the Foundation was created so others can experience these gifts as well.

Boston Children's Chorus is sponsored in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. The New England Conservatory of Music is our lead artistic partner. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is our lead corporate partner.
